One of our Bulldog Boost volunteers asked me today why there is a void of male teachers at the elementary level in our district. I assured the gentleman that it was not a district-wide void but rather a void that spans well past Midlothian.
I was not completely able to answer his question as I find that elementary school is perhaps the most rewarding position to hold as an educator. He asked of salary, applicant breakdown, and content interest. He mentioned how he was raised in a family that held education and teachers to be very well thought of and respected as a career path.
He mentioned how he feels Central Park is gifted with many great teachers who really put forth the time and effort for their students, and he thanked me for doing my job. He also said that he wished there were more men at the elementary level, to serve as role models for the young men coming through the school system.
It is an interesting question, and one that has been asked for as long as I can remember. And while I have no answer to this question, I can take pride in knowing almost all of the male educators of District 143 strive to reach their students as a whole, and continue to make a positive example for the boys and young men they teach daily.

That man’s question is a good one. Is it because teaching small children seems too much like “mother’s” work? Is the pay for elementary school teachers the same as it is for high school (it’s certainly more for college and universities)? Is there just more prestige in teaching older students than younger ones? That’s a very important discussion. Thanks for raising it.

Just had this conversation the other day with a colleague. Could have to do with society’s perceptions of elementary school teachers. If so, I hope they change and soon.

This is a definite lack in our system, as is the lack of ethnic/cultural diversity in the teaching force.

Yeah we need more male role models in all of education. We talked about this today at our purposeful play meeting.

I know someone who is not in the education field, but really wants to be a role model in an elementary school!

It’s simple, men can’t afford to teach Elementary School unless they have a wife with a good job.. Second scenario, they can live at home with their parents but most 25 year men don’t want to do that. It is a tough call to be in Elementary Education. I applaud those that give it a try. These boys need good roll models. Thanks Colin!
