Challenges

Here goes nothing!

I have heard and read of this challenge in years past.  I have explored the opportunity and created a blog in Summer Fun, but have always been a bit apprehensive of taking part.  I’ve felt this way as I know the intelligence of my colleagues.  I know their capabilities in writing and reading, and almost fear, for lack of other words, that I may not have what it takes to hang with them.

Friday morning I walked by the room the meeting was being held in multiple times, still avoiding putting myself outside of my comfort level, refusing to challenge myself.  There’s always next year, right?

Perhaps it was a friendly text that woke me up (literally and figuratively), or maybe it was a reminder of what I tell my athletes, but what are we if we are unchallenged?  Challenges are what make us grow.  Struggling is what helps us learn.  Stagnancy is easy, but breaching the comfort zone will only make us better in the end.

So now, as I have attempted to write this first post, and edited it about fifteen times, I now am ready to accept the challenge and ready myself to take on this month of March with you all!

I have the funniest image of you walking back and forth across the doorway of that meeting, trying to hear but not wanting to go in! Ha!

I’m glad you accepted the challenge – and you’re exactly right that we preach this to kids all the time.

You definitely have what it takes. I can’t wait to hear your stories this month!! Welcome!

When you called me to ask me about this I thought I accidentally called you and hung up. Then you called back and asked what to write about, I was so excited! I’m glad you accepted the challenge. I feel like since I miss having you in the same building on a daily basis that I can somewhat get to talk to you, even though you’re my bro in law now! By the way the excitement even spread to Scott (even he wanted to know what you wrote about.)

That was funny, Colin. And well-written. It’s so true that stagnancy is easy. Well put.

Welcome Colin! I can guarantee you, every one of us was scared the first time we wrote a slice, but you overcame the first hurtle…posting your first Slice! Congrats!! I completely agree that if we are going to push our students and athletes to challenge themselves, we have to do the same thing. I am so excited to read your other Slices!

I have to believe most of us feel the same the first time we enter this arena. Writing is an act of courage. And sharing that writing with peers, is even more daunting. I applaud your willingness to get in the arena, and dare greatly. This was a raw, honest, and authentic piece that points to a great voice within. I’ll follow your journey!
